Student Loan Garnishment
A story about student loan garnishement and working through the bad times.
I graduated college knowing that I had an outstanding student loan. I did not get a job in my specific field right away and that gave me bad credit because I did not have the money to pay for all of my living expenses and also the loan payments that were needed. When I looked online to get a government loan before I started my schooling the rate was bad but I filled out the application anyway. There was no alternative for me. This was the only alternative to not being able to move forward with a career that would benefit me in the long run. I started working with a business near my home. I was easy to get to and they were very generous with the hours given to me knowing that I had bills I had to get paid. One day they received a letter from my loan companies. The letter stated that because I was employed by them it was their legal duty to start garnishing my wages to pay for the loan. I was devastated because I was barely making ends meet as it is. I was now dealing with a student loan garnishment. I tried to talk to a lawyer about an alternative to a garnishment but as he read my application he shook his head and said that there wasn't anything that could do. The garnishment would continue. When I returned to work the next day the boss gave me a raise so that I would be able to continue with all of my regular bills and pay the loan off. I started to cry because I know that they couldn't really afford to give me that raise but did it anyway. They were like family to me. This has been a really hard year for me. I have seen my credit take a really bad turn. It is the lowest I have been and I am seeing the effects of it. I am working really hard to return my credit to where it is and it will be so freeing when it happens.
